PURPOSE: An LCD(liquid crystal display) and a method for manufacturing the LCD are provided to improve transmissivity, response speed and viewing angle with low cost. CONSTITUTION: An LCD includes a pair of substrates(110,120), a liquid crystal layer(130) interposed between the pair of substrates, and a pair of electrodes(117,123) respectively arranged on both sides of the liquid crystal layer to apply a voltage to the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal layer includes a portion having a polymer compound that is formed by selectively irradiating an active energy ray on the substrates while the liquid crystal layer is not provided with the voltage. The liquid crystal layer includes a portion polymerized by irradiating an active energy ray on the overall surfaces of the substrates while the liquid crystal layer is being provided with the voltage after the selective irradiation of the active energy ray.
