PURPOSE: A spatial light modulator and a hologram recording/reproducing apparatus are provided to obtain uniform beam intensity distribution with a simple construction and reduce crosstalk. CONSTITUTION: A spatial light modulator(101) has a plurality of pixels(101a) arranged in a lattice form such that transmission, reflection or blocking of light is selected for each and every pixel to spatially modulate light intensity. The light transmissivity or reflectivity is low in the center portion of the arrangement of pixels and increased as it becomes closes to the edge of the arrangement of pixel. A hologram recording/reproducing apparatus includes the spatial light modulator, a light-receiving unit, and a control unit. The light-receiving unit detects intensity distribution of light beam that has passed through the spatial light modulator. The control unit sets light transmissivity or reflectivity of each pixel based on the intensity distribution of light beam detected by the light-receiving unit.
