PURPOSE: A sewing machine is characterized by driving an electric driving device by power of a power holding device, though a fabric press member is elevated in interrupting main power, releasing hold and transferring the fabric press member to a descending position by pressurization of an elastic member. CONSTITUTION: A sewing machine comprises: a fabric press member(7) elevating between a descending position holding fabric and an ascending position releasing the fabric; an elastic member(24) pressurizing always the fabric press member(7) in a descending direction; a push up device(30) raising the fabric press member(7) against pressurization of the elastic member(24) and holding the fabric press member(7) at the ascending position; an electric driving device(6) releasing hold of the push up device(30) by driving; a power interruption detecting device detecting interruption of main power; a press height detecting device detecting height of the fabric press member(7); a power holding device holding power capable of controlling the electric driving device(6) for proper time after interrupting the main power; and a fabric press control device driving the electric driving device(6) by power of the power holding device and releasing hold of the push up device when the fabric press member(7) is higher than fixed height.
