PURPOSE: Provided is a method for preparing a 4,4-bis(chloromethyl)biphenyl, which can increase yield and purity of 4,4-bis(chloromethyl)biphenyl by improving an existing method for preparation of 4,4-bis(chloromethyl)biphenyl. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of (i) reacting 35% aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride, formaldehyde, and zinc chloride and phosphorus oxychloride, which are catalysts, to form chloromethyl alcoholate, and (ii) dropping biphenyl dissolved in organic solvent to the chloromethyl alcoholate solution to form 4,4-bis(chloromethyl)biphenyl of formula 1. The method is characterized in that a part of the phosphorus oxychloride is initially added in portions, and the rest of the phosphorus oxychloride is further added so as to maintain a relative ratio of added biphenyl to 18% or less during the reaction.
