PURPOSE: Provided is a pharmaceutical composition containing an extract of Rhizomes of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. which is excellent in liver protecting action and biosafety. Therefore, it is effectively used in the protection of liver cells, the prophylaxis and treatment of liver damage and the inhibition of mutation by a liver carcinogen. CONSTITUTION: The pharmaceutical composition contains, as an active ingredient, a lower alcohol extract of Rhizomes of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. which has a consistency. Rhizomes of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. is extracted by heating it with 1 to 10 times of lower alcohol, at 60 to 100deg.C for 1 to 12hr. The extract is filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The lower alcohol is methanol, an aqueous methanol solution, ethanol, an aqueous ethanol solution, normal propanol, iso-propanol, normal propanol or a mixture thereof. The effective dose of the extract is 1 to 2,000mg/kg body weight/day.
