SUBSTANCE: according to method of operation, working medium is compressed in pump cylinder of six-stroke internal combustion engine and combustion unit is filled with working medium. Then working medium is ignited in compression and combustion chamber of fuel combustion unit separately from cylinders, combustion unit is connected with working cylinder in piston top dead center and working stroke is executed in cylinder after which combustion products are evacuated. According to invention, compression and combustion energy is accumulated in fuel combustion unit by means of movable piston with reactive member, for instance, spring, with increase of combustion chamber volume and return of energy during working stroke at which piston of pump cylinder executes compression stroke, volume of compression and combustion chamber in initial state is zero.
