The printer has replaceable units with non-volatile, readable and/or writeable memory chips and an electrical supply for the chip. The unit interacts with the printer controller. A printer antenna that communicates with the transponder chip antenna is connected via data and/or clock lines to the printer controller for data communications. The printer has replaceable units (4a-4n), especially an ink reservoir, waste ink container, ink print head and similar with non-volatile, readable and/or writeable memory chips and an electrical supply for the memory chip with the unit installed. The unit interacts with the printer controller. A transponder chip (6a-6n) with an HF antenna is provided in the units or on an outer surface of each unit.
