In microscopy and spectroscopy methods, differences occur between two items of measurement information which are recorded with a different orientation between the magneto-optically active sample and the polarization plane of the scanning radiation. In order to obtain a high resolution, the modulation method provides that a rotation of the polarization plane is effected solely on basis of the Faraday effect. To this end, the light beams (LPB) are directed through a magnetizable and rotatable thin membrane (MF) made of a membrane material (K) that exhibits the Faraday effect. The polarization plane (PP) is rotated around a defined rotational angle ( phi 1, phi 2) whose values can be continuously adjusted by magnetic field intensities (B1, B2) and by the angle of incidence ( theta ) between the light beams (LPB) and the membrane (MF). The applied magnetic field direction (+/-B) determines the respective direction of rotation. A corresponding superimposition makes it possible to rapidly obtain any large-angle relative angle of incidence ( phi ) in a simple and highly resolved manner.
