A method for measuring the current density distribution or the spatially resolved material conversion during electrochemical reactions, where one of the electrodes is divided into segments that are insulated from each other, with each segment connected to an individual current source or sink. Each source or sink comprises an integrated circuit that is operated as a constant voltage source. Independent claims are also included for the following:- (a) a method for setting the current density distribution or the spatially resolved material conversion during electrochemical reactions; (b) a device for measuring the current density distribution or the spatially resolved material conversion during electrochemical reactions and; (c) a device for setting the current density distribution or the spatially resolved material conversion during electrochemical reactions.
