The belt retractor for a vehicle's seat belt has belt spool (12) rotatably mounted in a frame (10), a clamping disc (18) which rotates with the spool, and at least one clamping pawl (28) which can pivot between an initial position in which the clamping disc is freely rotatable, and a clamping position in which it acts upon the clamping disc and friction locks it so that the belt spool is blocked against a rotation in the belt pull-off direction. A spring (42) loads the clamping pawl into the clamping position.
