For the automatic count and/or classification of animal pests, to determine the infestation of plants, a flat underlay is prepared with the pests of an infestation sample, by brushing the pests off the leaves on to the underlay. The underlay is transparent, with a surface area of at least 5000 mm2. For at least part of the pests, the ratio of the surface of one pest to the total surface of the underlay is a maximum of 10-5 and preferably at most5x10-6 and especially at most10-6. The underlay is placed in a digital image processing unit e.g. a flatbed scanner, linked to a data processing assembly. A photo image is taken of the underlay, with the pests, with a resolution of at least 10-7 to 10-8 pixels. The image is analyzed by the data processing system, using a standard identification algorithm.
