The device has a roller and a clamping device that does not normally contact the material and that is applied to the roller when required so the material can be clamped between the roller and clamping device or can be fed while clamped. The roller and/or clamping device is driven by a drive device. The clamping device application movement is caused by a rapid-reaction actuator arrangement directly driven by a sensor on detecting a material tear. The device has a roller (3) and a clamping device (4) that does not normally contact the material (2) and can be applied to the roller when required so that the material can be clamped between the roller and clamping device or can be fed while clamped. The roller and/or clamping device is driven by a drive device. The application movement of the clamping device takes place by means of a rapid-reaction actuator arrangement (6) directly driven by a sensor (19) on detecting a material tear.
