Internal combustion engine comprises a cylinder (1), a piston (2), and a cylinder head (3), which define a combustion chamber (10). The cylinder head has at least two inlet valves (5), two outlet valves, and an ignition plug (9). A separating web (16) dividing the combustion chamber protrudes from the cylinder head into the cylinder. The piston has on the side facing the cylinder head a groove (18) into which the separating web is inserted in the region of the upper dead center of the piston. Preferred Features: The separating web is made in one piece with the cylinder head or is a separate part fixed in a corresponding receiving slit in the cylinder head. The separating web is made of niobium, tantalum, molybdenum or tungsten.
