The engine has a crank case including a cylinder and covered by a cylinder head (1) under the insertion of a cylinder head gasket. A piston moves in the cylinder and is arranged at a crankshaft supported in a crankcase. A cooling system includes a lower cylinder head ring cooling space (4) working together directly with the crankcase cooling space. The cylinder head includes recesses (3) working together with the cylinder. The piston immerses with its base region in the recesses, such that a topmost piston ring in the dead center position is arranged within the cylinder head gasket.
