A process for detecting the phase difference (PHERR) between two periodic signals, a reference clock signal (REFCLK) and an equalizing clock signal (PLLCLK), determines the time interval (CNT) between the signal flanks. The phase difference is determined from this. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a digital phase detector for the above;and (b) a digital phase detector for the above using comparison with threshold values
