The scanner has an automatic feed device for the specimen slides and a transport band for moving them through the scanner, with a machine sorting device depositing the scanned specimen slides in an archive. The number of specimen samples positioned next to one another orthogonal to the transport direction is selected so that the full width of each specimen slide is digitized during transport through the CCD scanning station, with transfer of the digital image data to a central computer, allowing assembly of an overall image provided with auxiliary information, e.g. a barcode, supplied to a server system. Also included are Independent claims for the following: (a) a calibration method for a specimen slide scanner; (b) a computer system for processing scanned images of specimen slides
