Alkyl phenyl carbinols are obtained by hydrogenation of alkyl phenyl ketones in presence of a nickel catalyst and a basic additive, using a starting mixture with a water content of less than 3 wt%. A method for the production of alkyl phenyl carbinols of formula (I) by hydrogenation of the corresponding ketones (II), in which R1 = 1-4C alkyl; R2, R3 = H, 1-4C alkyl or 1-4C alkoxy , (Structures (I) and (II), reaction scheme page 6) involves hydrogenation in presence of a nickel catalyst and a basic additive, using a starting mixture with a water content of less than 3 wt%.
