The device has a D.C. voltage input side (4), two converter stages (6,12) for converting a constant input voltage to first and second variable input voltages and two transformers (8,14) for transforming the first and second variable input voltages to first and second variable output voltages. The two variable input voltages can be produced with a phase shift so that current peaks on the constant input voltage side are phase shifted. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a motor vehicle with at least one electrical energy supply, at least one electric load and an inventive converter (b) and a method of operating a converter.
