The method involves emitting (12) a test light signal of predetermined intensity, receiving the signal at a receiver (14), and checking if the signal can be processed by the light receiver. A termination criterion for the regulation process is checked based on the ability of the signal to be processed. If the termination criterion is not fulfilled, the output light intensity is changed for the subsequently emitted test light signal. An Independent claim is included for a light barrier or optical detector.
