The safety belt system for the occupant of a motor vehicle has a deflection element (8) which divides the belt strap (4) into a section allocated to the occupant and a belt strap feed. A belt tensioner is provided on the belt strap feed (7) and has a deflection roller (11) which in the event of a hazardous situation is moved linearly. The belt tensioner is reversible, and the tensioner deflection roller turns the belt strap by 180 degrees. The belt tensioner is installed between the deflection element (8) and fastening point of the belt strap on the structure (1) of the vehicle.
