A process for the electrical control of an automatic gear in a motor vehicle (shift-by-wire circuit) does not transmit gear operation information directly in the form of P,R,N,D steps to the gear control unit, which determines the driver wish from transmitted information and converts this. An Independent claim is also included for a device for the above process.
