Optical measurement device for measuring the surface, especially the height, of an object. The device has a holder (1) or support for the object (2) with a support surface (1.4) that is at least partially surrounding by smooth graduated or stepped sloping surfaces. When the object is illuminated with measurement light (3) its height can quickly be measured by determining which step or graduation is in focus with the object surface.
