Production of chlorine by catalytic gas-phase oxidation of hydrogen chloride (HCl), in which an HCl-containing gas and an oxygen-containing gas are fed into a reaction zone containing a fixed bed of catalyst to give a product gas comprising chlorine, oxygen, HCl and water vapor, comprises removing a recycle stream from the product gas and recycling it to the reaction zone.
