The method involves a homogeneous engine operating mode in which the fuel injection is arranged so that first and second sub-quantities are introduced in an induction stroke, a third is introduced during a compression stroke and ignition occurs between 0 and 100 degrees crankshaft angle after the end of introduction of the third sub-quantity. The method involves feeding combustion air to a combustion chamber via an inlet channel, injecting fuel into the combustion chamber with a fuel injector arranged in the combustion chamber and igniting an air/fuel; mixture using an ignition plug in the combustion chamber, whereby fuel injection is carried out in several parts.
