Scandium complexes are new. Scandium complexes are of formulae (I) or (II). X = alkyl, silyl, aromatic or heteroaromatic; Y = alkylene or silyene whereby the amide nitrogen atom bonded to Sc is bonded to the carbon of the unsaturated heterocyclic ring by a double bond; R = hydride, alkyl, aryl, alkylsilyl, amide, tetraalkylaluminate or enolate; S = substituent; n = 0-3 for formula (I) or 0-2 for formula (II); D = N or P for formula (I) or O or S for formula (II); Independent claims are included for: (1) scandium complexes of formula (III) or (IV) and; (2) a process for the production of the complexes of formula (I) and (II) by reaction of a complex of formula (III) or (IV) with an alkylating agent, amidating agent or a hydrogenating agent. R = halide or triflate.
