A lightweight, tabular layer structure (LTLS) with two limiting planes (P1, P2) on either side of a spacer structure consisting of a bracing frame with several struts, in which at least some of the struts are not at right angles to planes P1 and P2. Independent claims are also included for (1) a structural element with LTLS as above, for space travel applications (2) an optical device with LTLS as above, for space travel applications (3) a method (M1) for the production of LTLS in which the spacer is made from a ceramic material formed from an initial bracing structure with angles as above by an infiltration process with heating (4) a method (M2) for the production of LTLS in which a ceramic material is formed from a starting structure by an infiltration process with heating, then the spacer structure is formed by mechanically working the ceramic material (5) a method (M3) for the production of LTLS in which base elements of a strutted spacing structure are arranged between planes P1 and P2 so that at least some of the struts form an angle other than 90 degrees with the planes.
