Substrate coating process for production of films or edge strips used in wood, furniture and automobile industries involves application by a roll rotating in opposite direction to substrate movement
A coating compound (4) is applied to a substrate (2) conveyed in a transporting direction (rT). The applied material is distributed over the substrate by a cylindrical application and distribution roll or drum (5). Rotational direction (rR) of the roll is in the opposite direction to that of the substrate transporting direction (rT). Coating compound (4) is either deposited by a storage vessel (3) onto the substrate (2) and then distributed by the roll (5) or is deposited by the storage vessel onto the roll which then spreads the compound in a uniform thickness over the substrate. Coating is normally continuous. The coating roll may be partially immersed in a storage vessel containing the coating compound and picks up the required quantity for the coating operation. Coating thickness is 1-1000, preferably 1-500, more preferably 1-250, even more preferably 1-200 and most preferably 1-100 microns. Substrates can be either films or edge strips. Independent claims are included for: a) a substrate coated by the process; and b) equipment for coating the substrate comprising a substrate transporting system (1), a compound storage unit and a drive system for rotating an application and distribution roll (5) in a direction (rR) opposite to that of the transporting system.
