Method for determining the current traffic information for a motor vehicle road user (4) on the basis of the locations and movements of mobile phones at sequential time intervals. According to the method, vector sequences of both speed and location of mobile phones are measured and the traffic situation determined in an area being approached by the user from the movement direction and separation of the phones of other users (6, 8, 10) in that area. In a built-up area if a number of pedestrian mobile phone users are detected, then a warning can be given to a driver of potential danger.
