The method involves pumping air out from the room and replacing it with a low-oxygen gas. The proportion of oxygen contained in the air pumped out from the room is filtered off and discharged into the atmosphere so that the filtered substantially oxygen-free air can be pumped back into the inert chamber. Independent claim describes apparatus for producing this atmosphere using an oxygen generator (1) whose intake pipes (3,14) open into the atmosphere (19) or the chamber (2) to be made inert. The oxygen-carrying pipe (7) opens into the atmosphere (19) or into an oxygen container and the pipe (9) carrying the purified gas (20) opens into the chamber (2) to be made inert and/or into a supply container (10).
