Roller furnace comprises a number of driven rollers (3) which extend across the moving direction of the fired material, and a number of firing plates (4) supported by the firing material and lying on the rollers. The firing plates are arranged in rows which run perpendicular to the moving direction and are displaced laterally against each other so that their edges running in the moving direction are not aligned with other. An Independent claim is also included for a process for operating a roller furnace.
