A method for conditioning plastic surfaces, e.g. acrylic sheet, involves shot-peening with micro-spheres and then coating with a curable protective varnish which fills the resulting micro-craters and repels selected liquids when set. A method for conditioning surfaces (1) of formed articles made of thermosets or thermoplastics, e.g. polymethacrylate sheet, involves (a) modifying the surface (1) by shot peening with microspheres so as to form a large number of homogeneously-distributed micro-craters (10), (b) coating the cratered surface with a curable protective varnish (5) which fills the micro-craters when in the liquid state and repels selected liquids when set and then (c) allowing the varnish to set.
