Production of pure oxygen comprises using an electrolyzer for producing hydrogen and oxygen from water and fuel cells for producing electrical energy from atmospheric oxygen and hydrogen. Hydrogen is circulated in an inner circulation between the electrolyzer and the fuel cell stack. The hydrogen is bound to oxygen in the flow direction from the fuel cell stack to the electrolyzer. The electrical energy from the operation of the fuel cells is directly fed to the electrolyzer. The system also has a filter for cleaning suction air, a compressor for producing the system pressure and a cooler.
