A method for printing individual paper sheets in which the path of a separate sheet though a printer (10) is fixed depending on the print data, where the individual sheet is carried along this path to a first printing mechanism (PU1) and/or to a second printing mechanism (PU2). The first printing mechanism is provided with a first storage zone (M1) and the second printing mechanism with a second storage zone (M2) of a store. Image data is contained in the print data (D) and is stored in the first storage zone (M1) as a queue and is used to generate a printed image by the first printing mechanism (PU1). The second storage zone (M2) similarly stores an image data queue for generating a printed image by the second printing mechanism (PU2). Storage in, and read-out from, the storage zones (M1,M2) follows the FIFO-principle. An Independent claim is included for a printer for printing individual sheets.
