The machine base (1) is cast from a polymer concrete and has guide surfaces (6,7) for mountings supporting moving machine parts (2), the guide surfaces provided directly by the smooth surfaces of the polymer concrete casting without requiring further machining. Jets (8) may be incorporated in the outer surfaces of the moving machine part facing the guide surfaces, for providing an air cushion (9) between the guide surfaces and the machine part. An Independent claim for a method for manufacture of a machine base with guide surfaces for mountings is also included.
