Method for detecting battery-less operation of a motor vehicle, whereby a computer unit accesses information in the vehicle control unit relating to power supply voltage and battery voltage and calculates a characteristic values or correction factors, which are then evaluated to detect if the motor vehicle is operating without a functioning battery. An Independent claim is made for a device for detecting battery-less operation with a power supply computer that accesses an engine control unit and analyses the resultant voltage information in order to determine the vehicle operating mode and battery state.
