The method involves generating a detection signal with a capacitive sensor. The signal penetrates into the medium under investigation so that evaluation of the signal, especially by impedance measurement, enables information to be acquired about objects concealed in the medium. A phase measurement is used with a measurement parameter correlated with a shift current of the sensor device to produce depth information regarding an object in the medium. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: a measurement device, especially a hand-held location device for finding enclosed objects.
