Portable data carrier, especially a chip card, has contacts (3) for data transfer via a contact data path and an antenna (4) for wireless data transfer. The data carrier has a first control unit (5) that is in contact with the connection contacts and a second control unit (6) that is in contact with the antenna. Both control units use a common memory (7). An Independent claim is made for a method for carrying out data transfer from a portable data carrier, whereby data transfer is controlled by separate control units according to whether contact-based or wireless transmission is used.
