The device has a controller (4) for implementing a shift mode by regulating to a desired shift stage based on a desired shift position sensor (6) signal. The controller divides a desired shift position movement path from a neutral position to termination at the shift stage during shift mode, changes from a current shift stage to a desired shift stage in a number of sections and repeats the first shift position for a section if the operation is not completed in a given time then repeats the operation to the desired position again.
