The navigation system may be in an active or a passive state and may receive global positioning system (GPS) signals from several satellites. The system can query street map data and may also determine the direction of motion of the vehicle along the street. Data may be received relating to traffic jams and the vehicle may be routed round them. The first step (S1) involves position determination. The second step (S2) involves querying street map data. The third step (S3) involves determining direction of travel. The fourth step (S4) involves collecting traffic data information. Further steps (S5- S7) restart the process if a NO (nein) answer is obtained.
