A process for the reduction of the concentration of methoxyhydroquinone (MEHQ) in acrylic acid that is neutralized to 75-100% comprises continuous adsorption on activated carbon. An Independent claim is included for a process for the production of superabsorbers (I) by reduction of the MEHQ content by the novel process followed by polymerization, optionally with non-neutralized acrylic acid with optionally surface cross-linking.
