The internal combustion engine is operated with a variable compression ration dependent upon the load cycle. The angular positions of the camshaft and crankshaft are detected by sensors (58,64) and signals fed to the controller (34). The fuel injection point (66) and ignition point (68) are determined by the controller based upon the sensors input.
