A process for producing a partial coating (5) on the surface (2) of a plastic component (1), comprises treating the area (3) which is not going to be coated with a laser (4). When the coating material is applied, it does not adhere firmly to the laser treated area. The surface of the plastic component is roughened during a pre-treatment stage, and is made electrically conducting. A metallic pre-coating, esp nickel, is applied to the plastic, and is removed by the laser from the area which is to be free. The coating material is applied chemically or galvanically.
