Vehicle headlamps (2) are equipped with lamps to provide a dipped beam (5), a main beam (6), etc. The invention proposes that a lamp control unit (3) is provided linked by a data bus (9) to a GPS navigation equipment (4). When the navigation system senses that the vehicle is approaching a crossroad or the entry to another road it informs the control unit which then directs the beam in use to illuminate those areas.
