Whilst still within the continuous casting plant (10) the cast strand (12) is deformed. This takes place near the bending- or directional drive rollers (24), following setting of the slab through its entire thickness. Deformation takes place early, whilst the strand is still at high temperature. It is achieved by intentional introduction of large quantities of energy using a reduction roller frame (30). The temperature is still sufficiently high that the depth of vibration markings (17) in the surface (16) of the cast strand is reduced. Energy released by deformation is introduced into the reduced strand (12') causing enlargement of the fine crystalline edge layer (18). In the following thermal treatment in a leveling furnace (40), recrystallization is intensified, refining the grain size in the deformed edge zones of the slab (12).
