The system has a control unit (17) that includes an analyzer (20) for processing the current driving status of an internal combustion engine (4). The control unit modifies the activation of the internal combustion engine based on the output of the analyzer and based on the current power demand from an electrical system (23). The electrical system provides electrical power to two drive units (3,13). The first drive unit (3) is coupled to drive the wheels (6) via a coupled gear unit (5). The second drive unit (13) is provided to drive an auxiliary motor (22) provided for auxiliary operations. A power supply device (14) has gas cells (15) connected to the electrical system. An independent claim is also included for the reduction of fuel consumption in the rail-mounted vehicle drive system.
