The brake unit for a rail vehicle has a parking brake with a transmission converting a rotational movement into an application movement of a pressure medium operated cylinder and piston actuator. A cardan shaft (30) connects the rotational operation means to an input of a toothed wheel transmission (12) installed in direct proximity to the cylinder and piston actuator (10), and a nut and spindle drive (62) converts the rotational movement at the output (36) of toothed transmission into a linear movement of the piston (46) of the cylinder and piston actuator.
