The actuating device has a piston-cylinder unit, whose working space is connected to a wheel brake of the vehicle by a hydraulic line. Another piston-cylinder unit is provided, whose piston is actuated by an actuating unit and is connected to the piston of the former piston-cylinder unit by a connecting unit. The two piston-cylinder units are arranged concentrically. An open valve is switched in a hydraulic connection between the former piston-cylinder unit and a reservoir (40). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a sensor module, particularly for use in an actuating device for vehicles; and (2) a method for operating an actuating device for a vehicle brake system; and (3) a method for diagnosing the function of an actuating device.
