A plug is placed against, or inserted into the urethra. The plug is dimensioned to close the urethra cross section, preventing flow of urine. The device is a tampon or plug (6). It is lengthy, roughly mushroom-shaped or cylindrical in its basic form. It has a circumferential projection around it - a ridge, bead or similar profile. It includes a bore (8) over part of its length in the far end. The near end is closed. The flexible material of the plug increases in length and decreases in diameter, when pulled. It is hollow, and is filled with a fluid (includes air-inflation) under pressure, increasing its diameter. A non-return valve or clip closure complement this implementation. Further variants and refinements are described, e.g. it is porous to contain medicaments, optionally these are fluorescent. An external fitting with a ring gripping the penis is included.
