The sorting device has one or more input devices (2), each having a mail separation device for feeding individual mail items to a transport device (8), transporting them via processing stations (5,6) to a loading station (7) of a temporary store (1) having a number of storage pockets, continuously circulated in a closed loop which passes each loading station. The mail contained in the storage pockets can be released to drop into open mail containers, by controlled opening of the storage pockets dependent on the respective mail destination addresses, with synchronized movement of the temporary store and the mail containers, so that each mail container passes below a given storage pocket during its movement through a transfer section of the temporary store.
