Recognition unit e.g. photodiode, color sensor or video camera locates marking on product. Illumination module and comparison unit check that color of marking has not already been changed. Marking is thermochrome dot, bar or surface marking. Energy transfer device, e.g. heat stamp, laser, microwave, infrared light, ultrasound or gas flame causes color change of thermo chrome substance of marking to show that deposit has been returned for that item. Independent claims included for: (1) use of device as return device preferably for cans; and (2) procedure to recognize and alter marking.
